Skittle Bombs vs. Zombies

I think the government and the media is just preparing the public for the inevitable Zombie Apocalypse, also known as Z Day. Why else are zombies so popular?

Solstice article link on Cauldron Stirrings

I could just post a direct link to the article, but that would defeat the purpose of having a seperate pagan/heathen blog. See what I'm talking about at Cauldron Stirrings.

Trailer for BSG: The Plan

Blow everything the frak up. Evidently easier said than done, which is good because it would have been a short BSG otherwise.

Deadpool concept art from Wolverine movie

Deadpool in Wolverine didn't look much like Deadpool. He looked like Ryan Reynolds with two swords. And while I like the take on the team (and would have liked to have seen more of them in action than just the demonstrations) looking more real world than comic-booky, I wished there was a way to more visually tie Reynold's Deadpool to the comic version. Looks like the concept artist thought the same thing.

Frankly I thought Weapon 11 blew. Wolverine's claws were already too big, but I could accept them because they were so integral to the character and that realistic size claws would be almost invisible on the screen. But arm-katanas? GTFO.

New Transformers 2 clip

I really hope the rumblings that I'm hearing that this movie could suck are wrong. I expected the first one to suck and it rocked, now I'm expecting this one to rock...

DDO goes to freemium model

DDO - Dungeons and Dragons Online - announced that they will be going to a free-to-play model with VIP and a la carte options. Boiled down, it means the basic game will be free, but if you want any extras, you'll have to pay. You can check out an article on Massively here.

DDO wasn't a bad MMO, the biggest thing working against it was the environment. If they had made it open world like LOTRO then it would have rocked.

It'll be interesting to see how this model works for them. Will enough people be willing to pay real coin to play a drow or a monk?

Consumer electronics shopping at Wal-Mart

A lot of noise has been made about how Wal-Mart is trying hard to expand their market share in consumer electronics, vying with traditional CE retailers as well as on-line competitors for ex-Circuit City customers.

As my regular readers know, I'm not a fan of Wal-Mart... quite the opposite in fact. I bash them enough to have an "evil empire" tag devoted to them. But it's hard to criticize their latest effort second hand. So I decided to do some snooping and visit the local Wal-Mart. Seeing as it is located in a fairly affluent suburban area, I figured it would be a fairer assessment of their efforts than the one by my work, which is in a decaying urban area.

If this represents an even moderate effort on their part... their CE initiative blows.

While I get that this store is not one of the new "remodeled" CE departments, there are a lot of things that can be done without sinking a mint into new fixtures.

The merchandising sucked ass. The best way to find stuff was just walk through the department. It was even worse in the DVD department. The new release and promo runs were as big as the catalog and made no sense. Want to find a movie? Walk up and down the aisle. And don't expect to save any money, overall their DVD prices looked higher than those at CE stores.

The computer section looked like it was transplanted from a Big Lots for the most part. The notebook demos were encased in plexiglass, so forget playing with them. And price wasn't a selling point here either, prices on hardware and software looked the same as other retailers and the selection was pathetic.

The TV section, where they are really supposed to be putting an effort, was weak as well. There was nothing impressive on their wall, the prices were the same as elsewhere, with third tier brands making up the price-leaders.

I was never approached the whole time I was in the department. Remember, this is a suburban area with people with above average disposable income. In TVs I literally got within 3 feet of an employee who was using an endcap as his snack station and talking on his cell phone and he ignored me. Out of the half dozen employees on duty, there was one who seemed engaged and was actively helping a customer. The rest were just there to make their $8 an hour.

I hope this is a trend, because I consider myself Wal-Mart's Rush Limbaugh... I want them to fail. Except I don't have millions of followers. Or millions of dollars. Or a political party that wishes I would shut up.

Kitty Hawk - a pulpy webcomic

Since my current Marvel campaign is set in 1941, I found this webcomic to be interesting. The main character has been described as a cross between Amelia Earhart and Indiana Jones, which seems pretty apt. So if you like pulp-style adventures, check it out.

Expensive Star Wars Legos

I have to admit, if I hit the lotto I'd probably have a room full of these.

Another one bites the dust

So I took my ailing PC to the Nerd Herd after I couldn't get the gorram video card to work right. After a couple of hours of fiddling with it, the tech told me:

1) I needed a new power supply as the old one didn't put out enough juice to fire the card when it was running in anything other than barebones video.
2) The card was conflicting with the firewire card.
3) My hard drive cried itself to sleep at night and didn't have long left.

His recommendation was that the machine was not worth sinking the money into it. I had them back up my docs and setting to my protable hard drive and took the machine home to yank the card so I can return it. Since he didn't catch the hard drive problem right off the bat, he didn't charge me anything for the time he spent trying to get it to work.

Now I'll need to re-arrange the den and move Chronovore (my gaming pc) to the main desk. I may yank out the small desk and add another book case, because I can never have too many bookcases. Plus it would be better than adding a minifridge.
