So much for weekly...

Facebook pretty much became the preferred way to share my net "discoveries" such as trailers or articles. Especially given the convenience of just having to hit a share button and bam, it's done.

Plus my GenCon plans getting trashed by work has caused me to lose my momentum on my game design work. No running a game at the Con means no pressure to finish up or have more betas.

And now Rift has started sucking my free time into its own dimensional vortex.

Odds of Alien Contact > Odds of Girlfriend?

Stealing the Wolowitz Coefficient (see the comments in the linked article), a variation of the Drake Equation used to predict the odds of contacting an alien civilization, a British mathematician has estimated that there are 26 women in the UK he could date.

You can see his math in the article here.

Of course, he leaves something out. What are the odds any of those 26 will be interested in him?

Muppets Ringing Of The Bells

Santa Claus Buried In Ireland?

I stumbled across an interesting article this morning. There is a tomb near Kilkenny Ireland that is supposedly the resting place of the remains of Saint Nicholas of Myra, the inspiration for Santa Claus. You can check out the article here.

Ragnarok at Costco?

It looks like I have another book to add to the list of books to read. Norse Code sounds very much in the vein of Gaiman's American Gods. Check out the review on Io9.

Another one bites the dust

So I took my ailing PC to the Nerd Herd after I couldn't get the gorram video card to work right. After a couple of hours of fiddling with it, the tech told me:

1) I needed a new power supply as the old one didn't put out enough juice to fire the card when it was running in anything other than barebones video.
2) The card was conflicting with the firewire card.
3) My hard drive cried itself to sleep at night and didn't have long left.

His recommendation was that the machine was not worth sinking the money into it. I had them back up my docs and setting to my protable hard drive and took the machine home to yank the card so I can return it. Since he didn't catch the hard drive problem right off the bat, he didn't charge me anything for the time he spent trying to get it to work.

Now I'll need to re-arrange the den and move Chronovore (my gaming pc) to the main desk. I may yank out the small desk and add another book case, because I can never have too many bookcases. Plus it would be better than adding a minifridge.

Welsh Hobbit House

Why am I not surprised that someone in Wales built a hobbit house? Check it out. Not only is it pretty nifty, it was done to be as environmentally friendly as possible.

Technical Issues

My workhorse PC is acting up, hence posting might be a bit sparse. I'm trying to find out if it is a video card issue (relatively easy to fix even for me... I installed the existing card) or if the computer is in its death throes. It's something like 8 years old and has been through 1 hard drive already.

If it is dying then I have to see if I can transplant its drive to this PC, my gaming computer, or if I need to just back stuff up. I've already copied the folders for my current games in case of a catastrophic failure.

25,000

I've reached 25,000 hits. I know, it doesn't really mean anything but it's a cool marker to me. I was also surprised to realize I've had 1,163 posts.

Now if only I could stick to something productive. :)

Crossbow vs. Longbow

Remember how in old school D&D everyone took bows over crossbows because with a regular bow you got 2 shots per round versus 1 with a crossbow? Well, this video proves it was right. To a degree at least, seeing as the monsters in the dungeon generally didn't wait for you to arrange your arrows in the ground. I'd like to see the test with both using quivers. Then again I'd like to see the rest of this video.

Where we're going, we don't need roads

Since they can't build longships and go raid Greenland, those wacky Icelanders rolls jeeps down sand dunes and drive them across lakes. The snowmoblie part didn't surprise me though, there's been competitions on water crossing with snowmobiles for years. When I was a kid and my family went snowmobiling, we were instructed that if we were going to hit a patch of open water to floor the sled.
