House rejects DTV delay

The Republicans managed to keep the DTV transition from passing in the House. You can check out the story here.

I was pleasantly surprised after the Senate Republicans just rolled over.

Gorram Mommy-Crats poised to delay DTV

I know this seems minor compared to the move to back the treasury up to a bottomless pit and start pouring money in, but the Democrats have decided that the people procrastinating doing anything about the upcoming DTV transition need another 4 months.

I say screw them. If they haven't figured out what to do by now then either tv isn't that important or they need to learn to read. But of course the Liberals continue to defy social Darwinism and force everyone to wait so they can hand-hold the "less fortunate".

Open Grave - a quick look

I've skimmed through Open Grave, the latest release by WotC for D&D 4e. As the name implies, it focuses on undead. It's a mix of fluff and crunch geared almost exclusively at DMs. I was actually surprised by the lack of actual player-centric material, it seems like WotC has really limited the potential audience (and sales) of this book.

For DMs, the book is moderately useful, more so if your campaign focuses on an area with a lot of undead *cough*Morimar*cough*. In addition to an assortment of monsters and options for more modifying monsters (great for when your players have memorized the Monster Manual), there is a spread of encounters running the gambit from low level to epic. I glanced at a couple of low level artifacts that I wouldn't actually tremble at letting my players get their paws on.

As I said, there was a surprising lack of material useful for non-DMs. There were a couple of rituals and that seemed to be about it. I figured there would at least be some paragon paths and magic items around the undead/fighting undead theme.

For DMs, I'd give this 3 necromantic undead flying monkeys. It's only worthwhile if you want to use a lot of undead. For players, don't bother.

Watchmen will be on IMAX

Watchmen TV Spot 2 is out, and it mentioned IMAX. There's an IMAX about 10 minutes from me so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

We'll get to watch Watchmen

Warner and Fox reached an agreement, probably ones that involve truckloads of money, and Watchmen is coming out on schedule. Here's an article with more details.

Historic event, historic price tag

I get that swearing in the first black president is a big deal. Hell, I'll probably try to sneak over to a tv long enough at work to watch the actual event. But every time I see a news story about the transition and they talk about crap like buying new drapes for the White House, I think "that shit must add up and we're paying for it."

After all, when they redecorate the White House it's not like they go to Target. They spend stupid sums on this stuff. If I was the president coming into the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, I think I'd be saying "leave damned decor alone and don't spend the money".

Then I heard the price tag for the Inauguration. Somewhere in the neighborhood of $150 million, six times that of Bush's. Frak. Spend one third of that (which is still pretty damned decadent) and save a couple thousand mortgages.

Better yet, do like some other presidents have done. Roosevelt served chicken salad and plain pound cake at the White House.

Check out an article here with more details.

Security is going to be expensive enough. Did we really need to shell out for Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers?

GCAG foiled, GenCon Ch 11 reorg plan approved

Looks like whatever the Gen Con Acquisition Group was scheming, it didn't impress the judge. He approved Gen Con's Chapter 11 reorganization plan (maybe it had something to do with the fact that the plan for the current owners includes paying back all of the company's debt).

You can check out an article with more info here.

I'm a Tinker

Your result for The Pop Culture Archetype Personality Test...

The Tinker

Ninja, Robot, Punk, Cowboy

The solitary tinker is detached from the world at large, forever deep in thought analyzing or inventing something. They are fond of games, puzzles, mathematics and language, with the task they are performing secondary to the mastery of the logic involved. They are relatively easygoing and likable enough, but when their beliefs are trod upon they become outspoken and inflexible, and while they do not want to make a spectacle of themselves they will defend their point of view vociferously. They are quite critical, of themselves and others, and they will correct imprecise language or thought, and consistently second guess themselves, often predicting impending failure. This lack of trust (in themselves and others) leads them to pursue solitary careers, leaving them aloof and detached, lost in the workshop of their own mind.

Tinkers often fall into Schizoid behavioral patterns, with an indifference to social relationships and a limited range of emotional expression. They take pleasure in only a few solitary activities, and keep only a few close friends (often relatives), pushing aside all others and things. This emotional frigidity leaves them detached and indifferent to praise and criticism.

Famous tinkers include Socrates, Descartes, Newton, C.G. Jung and Albert Einstein.

Creating classes just to fill books?

That was the first thing that pooped into my head when I read the preview for the Warden, one of the new classes coming out in the Players Handbook 2.

And how much power creep will we see? After, if you want players to buy the book, you have to give them a reason to play the classes, and from what I've read the general impression of the druid reflects this. I think the sword-mage from the Forgotten Realms Players Guide is further evidence of this... we need to make a class cool enough to buy play so let's make it tough.

I guess we'll find out in two months.

GCAG still trying to buy GenCon

It looks like the Gen Con Acquisition Group isn't taking "no" for an answer in their attempt to buy out Gen Con from Peter Adkinson, not only putting in another bid but also buying some of Gen Con's debt to weasel their way into the proceedings.

Here's a post with links to the legal stuff.

Japanese Watchmen trailer

Will we get to see it? March 6th isn't far away. My guess is that Fox will demand a dump truck full of money, and Warner will cough it up to keep their freight train full of money from going to waste.

Radio Rivendell

I could post about my renewed efforts to lose weight, especially since I packed back on 10 pounds, or write about my thoughts on porkapalooza the stimulus plan the Democrats are trying to rush through Congress.

But in my daily trawling through the RPG Bloggers Network I was led to an online radio station that specializes in fantasy music, Radio Rivendell.
