The pink and red plague

I went grocery shopping today and found that the XMas stuff had made way for the next commercial-hype holiday. That's right, Valentine's Day... a reminder to couples everywhere to spend or they suck and to singles that they just suck.

V-Day this year will be at roughly the 6 year mark since my last girlfriend broke up with me. Each year I've faced the bombardment that accompanies the "holiday" with increasing apathy. I managed to keep a good frame of mind last year, I just have to watch out for the work stress ganging up with the other usual negatives for this time of year to drag me down.

I almost never celebrate Valentine's Day, since I figure if you are only appreciative and caring to your partner once a year, maybe you don't need to be together, since you're obviously not important in each other's lives....

It probably sounds like Bitter Old Maid, or Sour Grapes or something, but honestly, Valentine's is so commercialized, it's about spending, not love, so there's no good reason to get depressed about it...*smile*

I will actually be out of town this Valentine's Day - in a conference in Albuquerque. Which is ok - I haven't received flowers from Mike since Andy was born (8 years ago). Oh, unless you couht the time he bought the motorcyle against my adamant wishes and tried to make it up to me...

I never got the Valentine's day thing anyway. He was supposed to be a saint, but he is associated with romantic love. Isn't that an oxymoron?

Saint Valentine- and there are at least two different saints by that name- was associated with brotherly love. The saint's day gained popularity among lovers and kind of lost the original meaning, as do so many things in American culture. While it is not possible to decanonize Valentine, the catholic Church officially removed Valentine's Day from the calendar over 30 years ago, as many historians believe that Valentine was a vicious person.

So any persistent celebration is not only purely secular, it's purely off the mark as to the original intent. So by all means, ignore 14 February as a romantic holiday- it doesn't exist except in the minds of capitalist promoters!!!!

I have no problem with Valentines day, as long as your lady recognizes the male version. One month later, we get to celebrate 'Steak and Blow Job Day!'
Check it out on the net, it rocks!
